Rats, mice, cockroaches, bed bugs, flies, wasps, pigeons: pests are a health, regulatory and image problem. In a restaurant, central kitchen or food-processing plant, an infestation can lead to non-compliance at an inspection or audit, or even closure. Pest control is a trade in its own right, often referred to as the three Ds: disinfection, disinsectisation (insect control), deratisation (rodent control).

The right approach is not to treat after the event, but to prevent: site inspection, identifying entry points and attractants (waste, stock, damp), protective measures, monitoring devices, then targeted action if necessary. Reliable companies favour an integrated pest management approach, combining hygiene, building proofing and, where necessary, biocide treatments applied by certified staff.

This page details the services, products and equipment, price factors and regulatory points to know about, including the French Certibiocide certificate. To prepare your request, use the specification generator, then post your request. For routine cleaning of your premises, see office cleaning; the other cleaning trades are covered on the page on cleaning and maintenance of business premises.

Common services

01

Rodent control

Inspection, identification of the rodents, secure bait stations or traps, monitoring of bait take and reporting. It relies on building proofing to limit entry.

02

Insect control

Treatment of crawling or flying insects (cockroaches, ants, flies, wasps) by spraying, gel, light traps or targeted treatment depending on the species and environment.

03

Disinfection of premises

Application of bactericidal, virucidal or fungicidal disinfectants to surfaces and volumes (spraying, fogging), after contamination or as prevention.

04

Bed bugs

Inspection, detection and heat or chemical treatment of rooms, flats and furniture, with a follow-up check. A quick response limits spread, particularly in hotels.

05

Preventive contracts

Periodic visits, a site map of numbered devices, readings, visit reports and corrective advice: the basis of a prevention programme.

06

Birds and nests

Bird proofing with netting or spikes, and destruction of wasp or hornet nests, using methods suited to the species and any protection it enjoys.

07

Audit and assessment

Site audit, a list of weak points and recommendations ahead of a health inspection or certification audit.

Equipment and products

Secure bait stations, mechanical traps and monitoring boxesUV light traps for flying insectsSprayers, foggers and thermal foggersProfessional biocide products: rodenticides, insecticides, disinfectantsTargeted insecticide gels and baitsHeat treatment equipment for bed bugsDetection: visual inspection, monitoring traps, detector dogsPersonal protective equipment: masks, gloves, overalls

What affects the price

  1. 1

    Type of pest and scale

A mouse, a wasp nest, a cockroach infestation or bed bugs call for neither the same methods nor the same number of visits. An initial assessment allows accurate pricing.

  2. 2

    Area and accessibility

The larger, more partitioned or cluttered the site, the longer inspection and treatment take. Loft spaces, crawl spaces and ceiling voids make access harder.

  3. 3

    Method chosen

Heat treatment, fogging, baiting or trapping involve different equipment, products and teams, with their own re-entry times and constraints.

  4. 4

    Visits and follow-up checks

A curative treatment often needs several closely spaced visits. A preventive contract is charged per visit or as an annual fixed fee, depending on the number of monitoring points and the frequency.

  5. 5

    Operating constraints

Night or out-of-service work, protection of foodstuffs, closure periods to respect: they lengthen preparation and may increase the price.

  6. 6

    Reports, traceability and urgency

Site map, detailed reports for audits, on-call cover or emergency call-outs: these services come on top of the treatment and cost more than a planned visit.

Tips for a successful request

Post a request
  • State the type of site, its area, its activity and the zones concerned: kitchen, storage, changing rooms, bin stores, outdoor areas.
  • Describe what you have observed: suspected pest, signs (droppings, marks, bites, noises), date first noticed, affected areas, photos.
  • Specify whether you want a curative treatment, a preventive contract or both, with the visit frequency envisaged.
  • Mention your audit requirements (HACCP approach, IFS or BRCGS standard) and the reports expected.
  • State your constraints: presence of foodstuffs, staff, children or animals, re-entry time and possible time slots.
  • Ask for technicians’ Certibiocide certificates (French biocide certification), the company’s insurance and the safety data sheets for the products used.

Disinfection, insect control, rodent control: the 3D approach

The three Ds cover distinct needs. Rodent control targets rodents, insect control targets insects (cockroaches, ants, flies, bed bugs, wasps) and disinfection targets micro-organisms on surfaces and in the air. Many companies offer all three, but not all are equipped for every case: bed bugs and heat treatment are specialities.

A reliable job follows four steps:

  1. Inspection and assessment: identifying the species, the affected areas and the causes (access, waste, damp, storage).
  2. Action plan: methods, products, frequency, measures to take on your side (tidying, sealing, hygiene).
  3. Treatment: baiting, spraying, trapping, heat treatment or disinfection, with re-entry instructions.
  4. Follow-up: checks, written reports, adjusting the set-up.

Integrated pest management rests on a simple principle: a biocide is only one tool among others, and if the causes are not dealt with, the infestation returns. Be wary of a quote that offers a chemical treatment without an assessment or complementary measures.

Certibiocide, products and traceability: what to ask for

The products used in rodent control, insect control and disinfection are biocides: substances intended to destroy or repel harmful organisms. Their professional use is regulated. In France, professional use of certain categories of biocidal products, including pest control products, requires an individual certificate, the Certibiocide, which the people applying them must hold. It is the first thing to ask a pest control company for.

  • The technicians’ Certibiocide, in date;
  • the safety data sheets for the products and the precautions to follow (re-entry, protection of foodstuffs, children and animals);
  • the company’s professional liability insurance, covering this activity;
  • a written report after each visit: pest observed, products and quantities, areas treated, recommendations.

Good to know. Meaflow checks the SIRET number (French company registration number) of registered companies, not their certifications or insurance: ask for them before signing. Some companies also choose to be certified to the European standard EN 16636 on pest management services; this is not a legal requirement.

An effective product is not always the most suitable: in a kitchen, a nursery or a site open to the public, the choice of product, application area and timing matters as much as its strength.

Catering and food processing: preventive contract and audits

For food businesses, pest control is part of the good hygiene practices expected under the European regulation on the hygiene of foodstuffs (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004) and is built into the site’s food safety plan, based on the HACCP approach. Private certification standards, such as IFS or BRCGS, also require a documented pest management programme.

A suitable preventive contract generally includes a site map with numbered monitoring devices, planned visits (from monthly to quarterly depending on risk), a report for each visit with readings and recommendations, and a contact for emergencies. Before signing, check the scope (inside, outside, ancillary rooms), response times in case of an alert, the term and the termination conditions.

The building plays a large part: sealing pipe penetrations, doors with no gaps, grilles over drains. If you are renovating your premises, build pest prevention into the project: see renovation and fit-out of premises. Cleaning and disinfecting production lines is more a matter for industrial cleaning. To get quotes, post your request or browse the hygiene and pest control suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

A question not answered here? Visit the help centre or write to us.

What is the Certibiocide?

The Certibiocide is the individual certificate required in France for professional use of certain categories of biocidal products, including pest control products. It shows that the person applying the products has been trained to use them safely. Ask the company for a copy of its technicians’ certificates, in date.

How much does rodent or insect control cost?

The price depends on the species and scale of the infestation, the area, the method, the number of visits, access constraints and urgency. A preventive contract is charged per visit or as a fixed fee. Be wary of very low prices without an assessment: they can hide a single visit with no follow-up and a risk of recurrence.

Is a preventive contract compulsory for a restaurant?

Food hygiene regulations require you to prevent the presence of pests, but they do not make a contract with an outside company compulsory. In practice, many businesses choose one to have regular visits, reports and evidence in case of an inspection or audit. It is for you to assess the risk specific to your site.

How long does it take to treat bed bugs?

It depends on the scale of the infestation and the method. A heat treatment can sometimes be done in a day, while a chemical treatment generally needs several spaced visits, with a follow-up check. The re-entry time, what happens to the linen and the preparation of the room are agreed with the company before the work.

What precautions should I take after insect or rodent control?

Respect the re-entry time given by the company, ventilate if it asks you to, and do not clean treated surfaces before the stated time. Foodstuffs, contact surfaces and areas accessible to children or animals must be protected. Ask for a written report setting out the products, the areas treated and the precautions.

Can my cleaning staff deal with pests?

They can maintain hygiene (waste, cleanliness, storage), which is essential to limit infestations. However, in France professional use of certain biocidal products requires the Certibiocide: treatment must be entrusted to a specialist company or to authorised people, not to a cleaning team untrained in these products.
