Grounds maintenance and landscaping: find your supplier

Business sites, residential blocks, residences, business parks: describe your grounds and the maintenance frequency you want, then compare quotes from gardeners and landscaping companies.

  • Verified businesses (company number checked)

Well-kept grounds add value to a site: the welcome for customers, the working environment for employees, the image of a residential block. Poorly maintained, they quickly become a cost: dying plants, weeds, dangerous branches, planting to redo. Grounds maintenance for businesses covers mowing, pruning, weeding, watering, tree work and leaf clearance, but also the creation and renovation of beds, lawns or outdoor landscaping.

Suppliers range from the self-employed gardener to the landscaping company with several teams. Landscaping companies often offer design, construction and maintenance together; many belong to a trade association, which is neither a requirement nor a guarantee in itself. For simple regular maintenance, a well-equipped grounds gardener is often enough.

This page helps you write a clear request: areas, types of space, visit frequency, green waste management, ecological goals. You can structure your needs with the specification generator, then post your request. For all maintenance trades, see cleaning and maintenance of business premises.

02

Pruning hedges, shrubs and trees

Formative and maintenance pruning suited to the species and the time of year, to preserve flowering and limit disease.

03

Tree surgery and felling

Work entrusted to trained climbing arborists, with precautions near power lines and traffic routes.

04

Weeding and beds

Manual, thermal or mechanical weeding, mulching, replacing seasonal plants and looking after perennials.

05

Watering and irrigation

Installation, adjustment and maintenance of a water-efficient automatic irrigation system, operated in line with local restrictions during droughts.

06

Landscape creation and design

Planting, turfing and seeding, beds, paths, fencing and outdoor furniture, with replacement of failed plants under the terms of the contract.

What affects the price

  1. 1

    Area and type of space

Lawns, beds, hedges, trees: each type of space needs different time and equipment. Area counts, but so do slope, accessibility and planting density.

  2. 2

    Frequency and seasonality

Visits are more frequent in spring and autumn: an annual fixed fee spreads the cost, whereas per-visit billing follows the season. State the number of visits expected.

  3. 3

    Equipment and staff

Ride-on mowers, platforms, tree work or chipping are not charged like simple maintenance. The number of gardeners and their qualifications affect the price.

  4. 4

    Green waste and removal

Chipping, composting or removal to a suitable outlet: collection and the distance to treatment sites are priced. Let bidders specify their disposal route.

  5. 5

    Plants, consumables and water

Plants, compost, mulch, fertiliser and water are supplied by the supplier or by you: the scope changes the price. For a new landscape, the choice and size of plants weigh heavily.

  6. 6

    Standard required and commitments

High-spec maintenance, ecological management, a guarantee on plant establishment or follow-up monitoring call for more supervision and visits.

Tips for a successful request

Post a request
  • Attach a plan or aerial view of the site showing the zones: lawns, beds, hedges, notable trees, car parks, access.
  • State approximate areas or lengths, the number of trees, the height of hedges and access constraints for machinery.
  • Specify the frequency you want per season and the finish expected: high-spec, standard or differentiated management.
  • Describe water management: existing automatic irrigation, water point, water butt, wish to limit consumption.
  • Settle what happens to green waste: removal by the supplier, on-site composting or chipping for mulch.
  • Mention your ecological goals (no plant protection products, biodiversity, native species) to receive consistent proposals.

Routine maintenance: contract, visits and differentiated management

For a commercial site, a residential block or a business park, the maintenance contract is the most common arrangement. It sets a number of visits per season, the services included in each visit and those charged extra. Two models coexist: the annual fixed fee, with a visit calendar and a spread price, and billing per visit or per hour, more flexible but less predictable.

Rather than applying the same rhythm everywhere, differentiated management adapts maintenance to how each space is used: frequent mowing in front of reception, late cutting on meadows, gentle pruning of hedges, fewer visits to little-used areas. It can reduce interventions and support biodiversity, provided it is described precisely and accepted by your users. A simple specification sets out the areas concerned, the mowing height, pruning periods, watering management, green waste and a report after each visit.

Finally, insist on a named contact, an announced visit calendar and regular visual checks: grounds are judged on the ground, not on paper.

Creation and renovation: from specification to plant establishment

A landscaping project follows stages: survey of the site and soil, landscape plan, ground preparation, planting, turfing, watering, then follow-up. The more precise the brief, the more comparable the quotes. Attach a plan, give an indicative budget, the constraints (accessibility, allergenic plants, limited maintenance) and the timetable: planting is mostly done in autumn or spring, outside frost and heat. Allow a realistic schedule: ordering plants, soil preparation, planting, then watering and check visits during the first months.

The quote should detail the type and size of plants, soil preparation, accessories (stakes, mulch, irrigation) and plant establishment: the length and conditions of an establishment guarantee should be agreed in writing, with the essential maintenance during that period, especially watering. For low walls, paving, terraces, fencing or earthworks, check that the company is insured for this activity, or bring in a building contractor: see renovation and fit-out to coordinate everything.

Environment and regulations: products, green waste, water

  • Plant protection products: their use is increasingly restricted, particularly in spaces open to the public. In France, professional use requires an individual certificate, the Certiphyto. Many suppliers offer alternatives: mechanical or thermal weeding, mulching, ground-cover plants.
  • Green waste: in France, open-air burning is in principle prohibited. Waste is chipped, composted on site or taken to a suitable outlet; state in writing who handles it.
  • Water: during droughts, prefectoral orders (arrêtés préfectoraux, issued by the French local state authority) may limit watering. The supplier must be able to adapt planting and practices.
  • Trees and height: tree surgery and felling are dangerous work, carried out by staff trained in working at height, with precautions near power lines.
  • Brush clearance: in French municipalities exposed to forest fires, legal brush-clearance obligations (débroussaillement) may apply to your land.

When the company works on your site, a prevention plan may be needed. To judge a bidder’s reliability, ask for references, insurance and the qualifications of its teams: membership of a landscaping trade association is a sign of commitment, not a guarantee. Frequently asked questions

A question not answered here? Visit the help centre or write to us.

How much does maintaining business grounds cost?

The cost depends on the area and type of spaces, the frequency of visits, the equipment (ride-on mower, platform), the green waste to be removed and the standard of finish. There is no price per square metre that applies everywhere. To compare, ask each bidder to price the same brief, with a precise number of visits and the services included.

Annual fixed fee or billing per visit?

The annual fixed fee sets a number of visits and spreads the price over the year, which makes budgeting easier. Billing per visit or per hour follows the season more closely but varies more. For a regular site, the fixed fee is common; for irregular needs, on-demand visits remain relevant. What matters is listing precisely what is included.

What is a landscaping company?

It is a company that designs, builds and maintains gardens and outdoor spaces, with teams of gardeners and sometimes landscape designers. Many belong to a trade association, though this is not a requirement. To choose, look at references comparable to your site, insurance and the qualifications of the teams rather than the job title alone.

Is the Certiphyto needed?

In France, it is required for professional use of plant protection products, for example applying weedkillers or chemical treatments. If you ask for maintenance without products, the question matters less. In every case, ask the company which products it uses, whether it is authorised to use them and what alternatives it offers, as these uses are increasingly restricted.

What happens to green waste?

It must be removed or recovered in line with regulations: in France, open-air burning is in principle prohibited. The supplier can chip it for mulch, compost it on site or take it to a suitable outlet, such as a composting facility. State in the contract who handles it, as the cost of removal can be significant.

When should planting and landscaping be done?

Trees and shrubs are mostly planted in autumn and early spring, outside periods of frost and heat. Turfing and seeding succeed best in early autumn or spring. Approaching companies early lets you reserve plants and organise the work, including the watering of the first months, which is decisive for establishment.
